Project Blue ~ #1

Anna (Anna Carson's Photography) is back from Hawaii and she's cranking up our color photo hunt for the next little bit.  If I hadn't already posted the umbrella photo in this series repeatedly, I would've uploaded that first--it's the most beautiful blue sky I've ever seen.

Instead, today I'll share our favorite sittin' spot at Hermitage Bay while on our 20th Anniversary trip back in October.  That little "fishy" to the right is Tad snorkling above a reef just 20 feet from the shore.  There, we met Nemo and a few of his friends...better than TV any day of the week!

The Greatest Spot(s) on Earth

I have three favorite vacations--choosing just one is like saying I love one of my children more than the other.

A glimpse of each:

20th Anniversary, Trip-of-our-lifetimes, October 2007:  Antigua (in the Caribbean)

This is the first time I needed a passport, and after almost a year of research (even polling blog readers), we found the perfect destination for us in Hermitage Bay.  We wanted intimate and private (they have only 25 cottages), all inclusive, beach front, and a spectacular setting.  Our expectations were exceeded as everything we hoped for and MORE was found in this stunning resort.

My only problem is deciding what photos to upload (I took over 600 pictures); because I'm on intermittent wi-fi at the moment, I'll choose just a few.

Yellowstone/Grand Tetons, July 2007

This was the first time I had seen this part of the country--and it was long over due.  Every American should be required to visit...Creation speaks the majesty of God in ways words can't even come close!

It was a great trip with our children and the downsides were a) we hadn't yet purchased a new camera and b) I never saw any stinkin' bears (but not for lack of trying!).

Jackson Hole, Wy., was the quaintest of little towns, Yellowstone was thousands of acres of illusion, changing form around every corner, and the Grand Tetons towered their glory above us, rendering me speechless in their presence (with jaw dropped to ground).

If you haven't gone, make plans to now!  Pictures do NOT begin to share the magnificence of these places!

Kiawah Island, S.C. - The past 14 summers :)

The beach--just about any beach--is my favorite place on the planet.  My spirit sings on first sight of the ocean, when I hear its thunderous applause as waves clap shore, and as my bare feet burrow into white sand.

We've taken our children to Kiawah Island since Rachel was a baby, and it's a tradition I can't bear to break.  Though I'd love to discover new places, the familiarity and beauty of this place is a siren's call to my heart...and I can't let her go.

Frustratingly, I can't get to my beach photos right now, but guess what I could find?  My #1 reason for loving Kiawah apart from that whole beach love-fest mentioned above:  ALLIGATORS!

We'll be returning in a few weeks and I can promise you I'll be on a hunt for this granddaddy gator...I just hope he's not looking for me, too!

Thanks to Alison @ RDH Mom for choosing such a FUN Fun Monday theme (favorite vacations).  Be sure to visit her to get a ton of vacation stories from others, and who knows...you might just find YOUR next destination!

Weathered perspective ~

Driftwood_in_antiga_hermitage_bay_2
Although I posted additional views of this driftwood a while back,
this new angle seemed fitting for Mark @ Regular Life's
Project Looking Through.  It's early morning at Hermitage Bay,
before the umbrellas blossomed to greet sun and shore.

While I'm on the prowl for new images for Mark @ a Regular Life's
"Project Looking Through", I've got a few good to go....
like this one, from Hermitage Bay, our 20th wedding anniversary destination.

Check out Mark's blog for more details--he'd love to have you join the party!

Cheers!

Visiting some of the others participating in Project Yellow reminded of some pictures I shot on our 20th anniversary trip to Hermitage Bay in Antigua.  Interestingly, they came in the form of liquid refreshment.  I had just gotten our new camera days before, and I was still learning how to cut on the blasted thing!  I wonder how different the photos would've looked if I were taking them today.

Carib--it's what the locals drink (or so we were told).

I spent hours in this spot, and seeing it again makes me a bit happy/weepy.
One day soon I'll share more about Hermitage Bay--
it comes close to personifying perfection,
and for once, I am NOT exaggerating! :)

If you'd like to post your own photos for Project Yellow, be sure to link them at Anna's site.

Project Yellow
Day 1:  Retro-funkiness meets common lamp
Day 2:  Egg cartons are pretty?
Day 3:  Butterflies & Bees (perhaps the best series I've ever captured)
Day 4:  American Icon

Day 5:  A floral canopy and conductor
Day 6:  Invisible rabbits & a ducky-chick
Day 7:  My boys--head, shoulders, no knees, but toes

Wordless Wednesday - Under my Umbrella

Dsc_0625

My view for the week during our 20th Anniversary trip of our lifetimes,
to Hermitage Bay, Antigua, perhaps the most glorious spot on planet earth...
certainly one of the most romantic destinations imaginable.
With snowy or cold days for so many, I thought a visit to
a warmer clime might do a body good.  It did mine :).

Another view of same...

"There's no place like home" might be true, but it's also true
"There's no place like Hermitage Bay".

Swell shells

Sea_shells_at_hermitage_bay_2

This was the carpet outside our villa at Hermitage Bay.  Some might complain that it was too uncomfortable to walk on.  Me?  Pure delight...I felt like a kid with carte blanc at a candy store every time I squatted down to look at these shells, each one of them a "prize" in their own right.

And with Mr. Weatherman teasing me that snow might visit our doorstop again (which I will believe ONLY when I see, touch, taste, smell and hear it), I was missing the beach.  Even though I LOVE SNOW as it's been documented here recently.

Go figure.  I'm an enigma.

Happy Friday, y'all...:)

Not Wordless, Still Wednesday

One of those little blog peeves of mine is when Wordless Wednesdays are prose heavy.  No offense--I know I have plenty of tendencies that march a few of you right up to the edge of a cliff where you'd eagerly swan dive to your demise so you wouldn't have to wade through another strike-through of mine or click a thousand links to other posts .  A caption is fine, explanations are helpful and sometimes downright necessary, but lengthy stories to accompany a "wordless" post...well, why bother calling it wordless?  I don't get it.

THAT BEING SAID she says, kinda-sorta contradicting the above paragraph, but thinking she gets away with it because it's a SEPARATE post from her WW there were additional photographs I wanted to post with my WW today...but they begged more words than were warranted for a wordless post.  "Forgive me?" she asks with innocent doe eyes and a smarmy toothy Eddie-Haskell-grin :).

Be sure to click the pictures; each image will reveal another that goes with the narrative.

Anastasia caught my eye because typically shells.can't.walk... when I saw one not only with LEGS, but on the MOVE, I had to investigate further.  When I got too close, Anastasia decided to play a game:  "If I can't see you, you can't see me."

Anastascia_the_antiguan_hermit_cr_2

Playing "hard to get" just made me love her more.  She'd creep back out of her shell heading right, and just as quickly change direction (and, oddly, I found myself humming Buffet songs... hmmmm).  We bonded instantly--why, she can't make her mind up about anything, either!

A_walking_shell_2

Anastasia taught me a lot in the little time we had together-- she'd trudge uphill at a snail's pace scamper away at mock speed to avoid my camera the paparazzi's glaring eye with an "I think I can I think I can" attitude that would rival the Little Engine That Could.

Uphill_climb

She was a good friend, my Anastasia...until she snubbed my feet and took up with another shifty character...

Feet_and_a_hermit_crab

I shoulda known she'd stick with her own kind...her beady eyes gave her away :/.

How to plan the near PERFECT 20th anniversary get-away

1)  Eighteen months BEFORE the 20th anniversary, the husband should casually say to the wife, "Hmmm, our 20th anniversary is coming up after this year, right?  We need to do something special."

    a)  You get extra points for saying this in the company of others so it can later be verified.
    b)  It's perfectly acceptable for that thought to be left dangling for a few months; suggesting this in and of itself is the first 20th anniversary gift.
    c)  In order for this to remain a gift, it better not be the only gift.

2)  Define "something special" to be a trip.  A good great  NO-EXPENSE-SPARED-FOR-THE-FIRST-&-ONLY-TIME-IN-YOUR-LIFE trip.  NoHermitage_bay_beach_chairs pressure or anything....

    a)  Begin saving.
    b)  Train your children to scrounge for loose change...it's amazing how much "silver money" you can find in the grocery store check-out line and under Coke machines.   Just invest in a bucket of Purell.
    c)  This would be a good time to lift your ban on playing the lottery.
    d)  And for goodness sakes--send in your Publisher's Clearing House entry!  You may have already won!

3)  Begin researching your options.

    a)  Read travel magazines.
    b)  Watch travelogues.  Sit through mind-numbing exciting slide shows of your friends and family.
    c)  Solicit suggestions from friends, relatives, neighbors, the Wal-Mart greeter--anyone with lips and a brain.  The two of those put together often result in  spectacular ideas.
    d)  If you want extremely diverse ideas, start a blog, make a few bluddies, and ask THEIR opinions...because bloggers NEVER shy away from sharing their opinions, and actually, they're usually pretty scary entertaining helpful.

4)  Plan your date.

5)  Secure childcare.  Make sure whoever is keeping your children understands they aren't just "taking the reservation...they're HOLDING the reservation".

6)  Determine the "ingredients" of your trip--the better your recipe, the more delicious its taste.  Crowds or seclusion?  All-inclusive or a la carte?  Nightlife?  Shopping?  Museums?  Theatre?  Fine dining?  Knowing what you want in advance is crucial in narrowing your focus.

Hermitage_bay_flowers 7)  Discover tripadvisor.com.  It will become an INVALUABLE TOOL in your research...she will become a friend.  Not just ANY friend, your BFF.  You will use her, seek her opinion often, and as a matter of fact, you will not book a trip without her from your first meeting until the end of time.  Or beyond.  You will want to give her surcies, write her love letters, and make out with her for HOURS (uh oh, I'm channeling PW)...but then you will remember tripadvisor is just a website.  A reeeally GREAT website!  And you'll be embarrassed you said all that gooey stuff (but you won't take it back because if T.A. was a person, you'd want to do all that and more).

8)  Pull the trigger and MAKE YOUR DECISION.  No matter how difficult this is...in spite of the self-imposed pressure you're putting on yourself for this to be the trip of a lifetime...make the flippin' decision.  The rest is downhill from there.

9)  Hypothetically speaking, if you're looking for:  private, all-inclusive, beach front, SPECTACULAR UNSURPASSED BEAUTY AND SERVICE, choose a place like Hermitage Bay.

Dsc_0622 10)   Consult luxurylinks.com, and if the moon is in the Seventh House And Jupiter aligns with Mars, you will save money.  Enough to pay for a kidney transplant (or at least hair extensions).

    a)  After you do a little happy dance round-off, back handspring WIN your auction, return to Robin's Pensieve and thank her profusely for i) providing a GREAT public service with this article; ii) helping you plan the PERFECT anniversary trip; iii) thumping your spouse in the head to get the ball running; iv) suggesting the time and the place to propagate the human race.

Homework--well done--WILL.PAY.OFF.

Juicy details to follow soon ;).
